Standard Rustic Waxed Finishes

Textured rough sawn Quebec Yellow timber is carefully hand sanded to maintain natural features & imperfections, with saw & gripper marks an intended characteristic of this finish.  As these characteristics vary from piece to piece, each item of furniture will present it's own unique features.  Considered a more care free 'living finish', the wax finish highlights the unique characteristics of each piece of timber.  Wax finishes can be left to develop & age with time & use, in the knowledge that, for high wear areas, an occasional fresh coat of wax will replenish colour to worn and marked areas.

Groove & Plank 'Antique Wax'

Rustic timber is treated using a traditional 'antiquing' process, opening the grain and giving more depth to the final colour.  An authentic aged antique wax finish results when combined with several coats of hand applied Fiddes 'Stripped Pine' Supreme Wax.

Basics 'Antique Wax'

Rustic timber has a light antique stain applied prior to waxing, to achieve the depth of colour to this antique wax finish.  Although the discerning eye may notice a slight difference, this finish is intended to closely compliment the Groove & Plank antique wax finish.

'GB Rustic' Wax Finishes

The GB Rustic workshop offer four standard waxed finishes.  Including an antique wax to compliment our other ranges.  All are prepared with a specific base stain & tint of wax, to achieve each finish

Standard Redwood Pine Waxed Finishes

Redwood pine is supplied sanded smooth & can be finished in a choice of several standard waxed, lacquered/varnished (+5%) or painted (+10%) finishes.

'Light Wax'

A light antique stain is applied prior to waxing, to achieve a more consistent depth of colour.  An 'antique' tinted wax is then sprayed to finish.

'Dark Wax'

As with the 'light wax' finish, a light antique stain is applied prior to spray waxing. However, an extra coat of wax is applied to the 'light wax' finish to achieve this darker colour, that's closer to our 'antique wax' finishes.

Standard Redwood Pine Lacquered Finishes

Smooth Redwood pine is finished in a choice of 3 base stains, with a sprayed clear satin lacquer/varnish applied for a sealed finish.

(Lacquered finishes add 5% to waxed prices)

'Antique Lacquer'

A golden antique stain is applied prior to finishing with a sprayed clear lacquer. Resulting in a sealed satin sheen finish, that needs minimal maintenance. This finish is often applied to tie-in with older pine furniture with a mellowed varnish finish.

'Autumn Lacquer'

A deeper brown antique stain is applied prior to finishing with a sprayed clear lacquer.  A sealed satin sheen finish, that needs minimal maintenance. One of our most popular lacquered finishes, that is similar in colour to our 'antique wax' finishes.

'Jacobean Lacquer'

A dark brown 'jacobean' stain is applied prior to finishing with a sprayed clear lacquer.  A sealed satin sheen finish, that needs minimal maintenance.        Our darkest lacquered finish.

Standard Painted Finishes

Painted finishes can be applied to both rustic and smooth redwood timbers.  Our redwood pine & 'Basics' rustic workshops specialise in two-part acrylic spray painted finishing.  A durable paint finish with a 10% low sheen.   While our 'GB Rustic' workshop can apply hand painted eggshell finishes. Groove & Plank can also be ordered in an unfinished state, & then painted in-house with a hand applied eggshell finish.  As a guide, painted finishes generally cost 10% more than waxed finishes.  Although in-house special finishes may cost a little extra.  Please feel free to contact us discuss your requirements.

We offer 12 standard paint colours, closely represented in the chart below.  Other colours can also be mixed at an extra cost

Grain detail & colouration vary naturally between the timbers used.  Other natural timber features, such as oak's distinctive 'medullary rays', may only reveal themselves after finishing.

These features are an acknowledged characteristic of high quality solid oak furniture, and can vary from item to item.

Reclaimed Waxed Finishes

Reclaimed timbers are either lightly sanded for a 'rustic' finish, or sanded further to a 'smooth' finish.  The inherent nature of 'reclaimed' material means that each item of furniture will present it's own unique features.  Species of timber, colouration & characteristics will vary from piece to piece.  Natural features & imperfections, saw & gripper marks, shakes & splits, nail holes, random notches & other features from it's previous use, are all maintained as evidence and an intended characteristic of both finishes.   Also considered a more care free 'living finish', the tinted wax highlights the unique characteristics of each piece of timber.  These finishes can be left to develop & improve with time & use.  In the knowledge that, for high wear areas, an occasional fresh coat of wax will add back colour to worn and marked areas.

'Smooth'

Sanded smoother, while maintaining deeper marks & features. Although there will be some natural colour variation between reclaimed timbers, a light antique stain is applied prior to waxing, to achieve a more consistent colouration to this finish.

'Rustic'

Light sanding retains much of the unique character of the reclaimed timber.  The waxed finish darkens textured areas and deeper features, which naturally vary.  Cut and machined faces remain smooth and appear paler, creating our most characterful finish for truly unique items of furniture.

Timber Finishes & General Care

Natural timber features, minor imperfections, natural colour variation & grain detail will vary between timbers, are wholly unpredictable, and an accepted characteristic of solid wooden products. Saw marks, gripper marks, and other mechanical marks, are also maintained as an intended characteristic of rustic finishes, making every single piece of furniture completely unique.

Waxed Finishes:

Waxed finishes can all be maintained by occasional re-waxing.  Frequency will depend on wear and personal preference.  For guidance, we would normally consider re-waxing high wear areas, such as table tops, once or twice a year.  Fiddes & Sons 'Stripped Pine' Supreme Wax is recommended for all antique wax finishes. Please contact us for the most suitable wax to maintain our other waxed finishes.  Additional coats of wax will gradually richen & darken finishes further, while also allowing the finish to be buffed to a sheen more easily for a more lustrous finish.  Any marks picked up over time can usually be easily disguised or diminished by waxing.  A warm damp cloth should be used for cleaning, as even apparently mild cleaning products may affect the finish.  As with any waxed finish, we recommend the use of protection (such as mats, coasters & trivets) for any prolonged contact with warm & hot items.

Lacquered Finishes:

This finish needs minimal maintenance.  Although UV inhibitors in the lacquers limit it's effect, these finishes will eventually mellow to a more golden version of the original colour with exposure to UV and day light.  Although a more durable finish than wax, that's easy to wipe clean, a warm damp cloth should still be used for cleaning, as even apparently mild cleaning products may affect the finish.  As with waxed finishes, we recommend the use of protection (such as mats, coasters & trivets) for any prolonged contact with warm & hot items.

Painted Finishes:

This finish needs minimal maintenance.  A warm damp cloth should be used for cleaning, as some cleaning products may affect the finish. Features & texture of rustic timbers are obviously intended to show through rustic painted finishes.  Natural timber features, minor imperfections & grain detail can show through any painted finish.  Timber can also move, expanding and contracting over time, when subject to changes in environmental conditions.  As a result of this movement we can expect hairline cracks to develop in the painted finish, in areas such as at timber joints.  Knots are treated with 'knotting' and primed, but they can still show through or slightly discolour the final paint finish over time.  These are all considered evidence, and an accepted characteristic, of painting solid wood.  If you prefer to minimise characteristics associated with knots, most designs can be made in a specialised 'knot-less' timber, but this does carry a 30% surcharge to redwood pine prices.

Oiled Finishes:

Oiled finishes can easily be re-oiled as required.  A warm damp cloth should be used for cleaning, as some cleaning products may affect the finish.
