Help with Choosing a Mattress

Pocket sprung mattresses are traditionally the most luxurious in feel, offering the best targeted body support and comfort.
Thousands of individual pocketed springs are linked together, but move individually, separately adjusting to your body shape and weight.
On average you spend a third of your lifetime in bed, so choosing the correct mattress is paramount.

All Burgess pocket sprung mattresses are offered in a choice of at least two different tensions (levels of firmness).
As a general rule, your hips and shoulders should be able to sink down a bit, so that your spine remains straight.

Although an appropriate mattress firmness will depend a lot on body weight, choosing the correct tension will actually depend on several factors:
• Personal comfort preferences • Usual sleeping position(s) • Any sleep-related or medical issues you may have • Body type as well as body weight

Burgess offer some guidance on suitable mattress tensions, based on an individual's body weight:

• up to 11 stone (70kg) - Soft/Medium Tension
• 11 to 16 stone (70-102kg) - Medium Tension
• 16 to 20 stone (102-127kg) - Firm Tension
• above 20 stone (127kg +) - Extra Firm

Please be aware that soft tensions are less suited to our slatted bed frames, so we usually recommend a medium tension as a good start point.
Also, firm mattresses are often recommended for individuals with back pain or bad backs, but it's more important to achieve the 'correct' support.
So medical advice, specific to any individual issues, should really be sought.

Ultimately, mattress preference will vary from person to person & will be a very personal choice.
If possible, we recommend trying different mattress models and tensions, to assess which feels the best for you. Needless to say, the more time you can lie on a mattress, the better 'feel' you will get. We usually have examples of each of our mattress models on display in our Chester showroom for you to try, and at least one example of a medium to firm tension comparison.

We understand that visiting our showroom may not always be possible, or convenient, so we hope the above guidance will offer sufficient help in choosing a suitable mattress tension. We can also arrange for customers to visit the Burgess factory showroom in Haslingden, if this is more convenient or if you would like to discuss and explore any other Burgess products.
